TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - For Seminole County senior Nathan Landing, football has always been at the forefront of his day to day.
“I remember helping organize the helmets and everything while he was doing the laundry and things like that.”
A coach’s kid, Landing soaked every moment up.
“Football has always been in the blood,” he said. “That’s always what I wanted to do.”
“Not only is he getting coaching on the field, but he’s getting constant coaching at home as well,” said Seminole County head football coach Cedric Stegall. “Parents telling him this, parents telling him that, and it’s not all football related, which is a good thing.”
The coaching has paid off on the field, where Landing was a three-year starter for the Indians.
“He had 23 games under his belt going into his senior year and that makes a big difference when you’re playing offensive line,” said Stegall. “The mistakes were far and few.”
It’s also paid off in the classroom, where he has a 3.9 GPA as a dual-enrolled student.
“My dad always makes sure my academics are high,” he said. “He knows if I keep my grades high, it’ll be easier to get into schools and hopefully get a scholarship to play football too.”
Because for the kid that grew up around the game, the goal is to stay around it for a few more years.
“That’s always been my dream to play college football.”
“It’s easy to sell a kid when the coaches come in, yeah they have a 3.9, and they get all excited about that, not only is he a student in the classroom, he’ll be a student on the field as well,” added Stegall.
That will be missed about LAnding when he’s graduated and gone.
“He’s one of the select few that knows how to lead,” said Stegall. “You don’t necessarily have to lead by running your mouth all the time, just lead by action. He does a little bit of both.”
Leading by example, just how he learned to so many years ago. He said he’s not sure what he wants to major in just yet, but he’s leaning toward something in the sports field like physical therapy or sports management.

SCMHS is pleased to announce that Chyna Calloway, Kody Ross, and Bryson Sparks signed their REACH scholarship commitment letters this morning. Seminole County 8th graders Chyna Calloway, Kody Ross, and Bryson Sparks will be provided a mentor and an academic coach to assist them throughout their school careers. REACH Scholars will receive $10,000 for post-secondary tuition upon high school graduation.
The Seminole County Green Machine, under the direction of band director Chelsea Willis and assistant Amy Cannon, had the privilege of participating in the local Veterans parade today to honor our local Veterans and Heroes. Although the rain caused them to change up their tunes, the SCGM drumline did a fantastic job keeping the beat and entertaining bystanders as they marched down 2nd Street.
Moving from the lawn to the courtroom, patrons had the opportunity to watch as our local Vetern’s chapter did a presentation of colors, heard TAPS from our own Daniel Castor, songs from The Seminole Singers, and a powerful message from Veteran, Pastor and Actor Ken Bevel (from Fireproof and Courageous) from Albany, Ga. Band Members were thrilled to get the opportunity to meet Mr. Bevel and share a quick photo.
A family-style breakfast and planning session are key components that enable Mrs. Tammy Hornsby’s students to set daily goals and build strong connections in the classroom.
The BioEd Institute is a division of Georgia Bio. The Institute aims to strengthen the life sciences workforce pipeline through classroom-to-career initiatives that align with industry needs. They work to build the capacity of Georgia classrooms to support the future life science workforce with teacher professional development in biotechnology. Biotech Ambassadors meet monthly with Georgia Bio staff and complete deliverables that help Georgia Bio reach more teachers across the state. In addition to helping with Georgia Bio's goals, Ambassadors work with Georgia Bio staff to define their personal leadership goals and create a plan to reach those goals.
Mrs. Crystal Milner, a high school science teacher at SCMHS, has been selected as a Biotech Ambassador. As an Ambassador, Mrs. Milner looks forward to connecting with professionals, researchers, and students in the biotech field, creating valuable relationships for future opportunities. Congratulations, Mrs. Milner! We are proud of you!

AP Biology students embarked on an exciting journey into the world of cellular energy, using a series of hands-on labs to deepen their understanding of essential biological processes. From investigating the action of enzymes to unraveling the secrets of photosynthesis, these labs provided a dynamic and engaging learning experience.
Pineapple Enzyme Lab: Investigating Bromelain's Effects
The first experiment focused on the enzyme bromelain, found in fresh pineapple. Students explored how this enzyme breaks down proteins by observing its effects on gelatin, a protein-based substance. The experiment demonstrated enzyme specificity and how environmental factors like temperature and pH affect enzyme activity. The class was fascinated to see the gelatin fail to set when fresh pineapple juice was added, providing clear, visual evidence of enzymatic action.
Enzyme Catalysis Lab: Measuring Reaction Rates
Next, students delved into enzyme catalysis using catalase, an enzyme that speeds up the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. By manipulating variables such as substrate concentration, students collected data on reaction rates and graphed their findings. This lab not only reinforced core concepts about enzyme activity and reaction rates but also honed students' skills in data analysis and scientific reasoning.
Photosynthesis Chromatography Lab: Separating Plant Pigments
Students explored the process of photosynthesis using paper chromatography to separate plant pigments. By applying a leaf extract to chromatography paper and immersing it in a solvent, students observed distinct bands of pigments like chlorophylls, carotenoids, and xanthophylls. This technique helped students visualize the different pigments involved in capturing light energy during photosynthesis, sparking discussions about the roles of each pigment in the process.
Chlorophyll Fluorescence Lab: Investigating Light Absorption
Finally, students investigated chlorophyll fluorescence to understand light absorption in plants. By shining blacklight on chlorophyll extract and observing its fluorescence, students witnessed how chlorophyll molecules absorb light energy and re-emit it as lower-energy red light. This experiment offered a deeper look into the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis, highlighting how plants capture and convert light energy.
Through these interactive labs, our AP Biology students gained valuable insights into cellular energy processes, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world biological phenomena. The hands-on approach not only deepened their understanding but also fostered curiosity and a passion for scientific discovery. We look forward to seeing where their explorations take them next as they continue to unlock the mysteries of biology.
As we observe Veterans Day, we take a moment to honor and express our deep appreciation for the veterans within our school system and all veterans who have bravely served our country. Your dedication and sacrifices have made a profound impact on our lives and our freedom. Thank you for your service and for being an inspiring part of our community.
