Good standing is a classification giving students certain rights and privileges. It will be based on four categories: Attendance, Tardiness, Grades, and Discipline. A student must earn Good Standing. It is a privilege, not a right. It will be used as a reward incentive. Good Standing will be evaluated at the end of each 9 week period. Attendance: 1. No unexcused absences during a 9 week period. a. In order for an absence to be excused, the school must receive written notice from a parent/guardian or a doctor’s office as to why the student was absent. This written notice must be received within three days of the student’s return from absence. THIS PROCEDURE WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED. 2. No more than 4 excused absences per class per 9 week period not to exceed 7 total in a semester. Total absences include both excused and unexcused absences. 3. Once a student has missed 8 days in any class, he or she will not be eligible for good standing till the next semester. a. Absences will be defined by individual class periods. EX- once you have missed 4 days in first period you will not be in good standing for the next 9 week period. When you have missed 8 (excused or unexcused) days in first period, you will not be eligible for good standing till next SEMESTER. Tardiness: 1. A student is only allowed 2 tardies per 9 week period in order to remain in Good Standing. 2. See tardy rules in handbook for disciplinary action. Grades: 1. A student must be passing all classes at the end of each 9 week period. 2. An incomplete will be considered not passing. Discipline: 1. A student will only be allowed 3 days of ISS per semester. Once a student reaches 4 days of ISS, they will no longer be eligible for Good Standing till the following semester. 2. Any out of school suspension will revoke good standing until the following semester

TEACHER SPOTLIGHT: Mr. Jeremy Burke was chosen as this week's teacher spotlight. He is an eighth grade science teacher, and he is also a cross country and tennis coach. I asked Mr. Burke a few questions about his teaching experience here at Seminole County Middle/High School. The first question I asked him was why he chose to work here and be a teacher. He responded by saying, “I used to have my own business, and I was tired of working during the holidays. I also wanted to make science more fun for the students in our community. This has been a good change for me. I have enjoyed teaching.” I had him in the eighth grade for science, and I can honestly say that he has done an amazing job making science very fun for his students. The next question I asked him was what his hobbies were. He said his favorites were fishing, working outdoors, and gardening. Teacher always have great stories about embarrassing moments, so I asked Mr. Burke was what his most embarrassing moment had been. He said, “One time we were doing a static electricity experiment, and I had to put on a wig; the static electricity made it stick up everywhere! That is a look I definitely don’t want to repeat.” Finally, I asked Mr. Burke to share his favorite teaching memory. He said, “While doing experiments with our solar ovens, someone's oven got so hot that it caught on fire.” The day was certainly not boring, and those ovens worked better than Mr. Burke had expected! In my experience as one of Mr. Burke’s students, I can say that he was and will always be one of my favorite teachers. He makes science fun and enjoyable, which in turn, makes his students more interested in science and science experiments. Thank you, Mr. Burke! By Leahbeth Boyett, Journalism I #Tribe.Strong

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Indiya Williams is an outstanding student here at Seminole County Middle High School, so this week the spotlight is on her! Indiya is a sophomore this year, and she is looking forward to finishing school here at Seminole County Middle High School, the best school in southwest Georgia! This year, Indiya is working hard to maintain her good grades so that she can stay a member in good standing in the National Honor Society. In addition to her studies, she is working to stay in shape for basketball. She is looking forward to a good season this year. After graduating, she wants to start her own business and become a real estate agent. Indiya’s favorite quote is, “If you aren’t living life, then what are you doing?” She loves this quote because when she’s not busy studying for school, she is out living her life! Congratulations, Indiya! #Tribe.Strong By Sierra Barber, Journalism II
