Mary Kathryn Kelley and Anna Kate Kirkland, 10th graders at SCHS, have been nominated as ambassadors for the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar. HOBY is a non-profit organization that was started in 1958 by celebrity actor, Hugh O’Brian. The mission of HOBY is to inspire and develop the global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation. The vision of HOBY is to motivate and empower individuals to make a positive difference within our global society, through understanding and action, based on effective and compassionate leadership. They will attend the three-day seminar with students from all over Georgia. HOBY empowers its ambassadors to speak up and be confident in their ability to influence the world. They will also learn about different kinds of people and how to relate to them. HOBY will be held at Middle Georgia State University in Cochran, GA, from June 6th to June 8th. We are very excited for and proud of them both, and we wish them the best as they represent SCHS this summer.

Healthcare Science students recently enjoyed an engaging and educational visit from Miller County Hospital's HR and Respiratory Department. The event aimed to introduce students to the wide array of career opportunities available in the healthcare field, with a particular focus on respiratory care. The interactive session provided students with hands-on experiences, allowing them to explore the daily responsibilities and challenges of respiratory therapists. From learning about respiratory equipment to understanding patient care procedures, the students gained valuable insights into this critical healthcare profession. Hospital staff emphasized the importance of respiratory therapy in treating patients with breathing difficulties, from asthma to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The HR team also shared tips on pursuing healthcare careers, highlighting educational pathways and the growing demand for skilled professionals in the field. Students not only gained practical knowledge but also had fun exploring their potential future roles. "It was an eye-opening experience," one student remarked. "I didn’t realize how vital respiratory therapists are to patient care." This visit underscored Miller County Hospital's commitment to community outreach and fostering the next generation of healthcare professionals. Through events like these, students are inspired to consider fulfilling careers that make a meaningful difference in people's lives.
