The purpose of the Young Georgia Authors writing competition is to encourage students to develop enthusiasm for and expertise in their writing, to provide a context to celebrate their writing successes, and to recognize student achievement in arts and academics. This prestigious competition has been engaging Georgia students for more than two decades and is open to any student currently enrolled in Georgia public schools, grades K -12. The competition is sponsored by the Georgia Language Arts Supervisors (GLAS) and the Georgia RESA Network with support from the Georgia Department of Education. All first-place entries advanced to the RESA District competition.

Youth Poll Workers Recognized at Capitol

Seminole County Middle High School is incredibly proud to recognize a group of outstanding students who were honored yesterday at the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta for their service as Youth Poll Workers in Seminole County.

Through the Seminole County Youth Poll Worker Initiative, these students had the unique opportunity to serve alongside certified poll workers during the election cycle. They completed official training, became certified, and worked multiple days of Advanced In-Person voting as well as Election Day. Throughout the process, they demonstrated professionalism, responsibility, and a true commitment to civic engagement.

In recognition of their hard work and dedication, the Georgia House of Representatives adopted an official resolution commending these students for their contributions to the democratic process. The resolution was put forth by Representative Gerald Greene, who invited the students to the Capitol to be formally recognized.

Students recognized included:

Christian Albritton
Mackenzie Brown
Courtney Cannon
Marianna Christian
Jada Coachman
Jayla Coachman
Emma Godby
Jolie Grand
Ven’teria McLeroy
Milan Richardson
Ava Thompson

Students attending the recognition were joined by key leaders who helped make this initiative possible, including our local Clerk of Elections, the Seminole County Elections Supervisor, and Mrs. Peggy Thompson, Social Studies Department Chair at Seminole County Middle High School. Their leadership and guidance played a vital role in preparing our students for this authentic civic experience.

We are extremely proud of these students for representing Seminole County Middle High School and our community with excellence. Opportunities like this provide real-world learning experiences that go far beyond the classroom — building leadership, responsibility, and an understanding of the importance of civic duty.

Thank you to Representative Gerald Greene, our Seminole County Elections Office, and Mrs. Peggy Thompson for investing in our students and helping make this recognition possible.
