Zada Espinoza, Jillian Johnson, Kynia Blake, Kerionna Moore, Hope Humphries, and Madison Martin, along with SCMHS math teacher Amy Cannon, participated in an interactive mathematics event at Valdosta State University. This event, called SKY Day, is dedicated to Sonya Kovalevsky, a pioneering female mathematician, and aims to empower young women in mathematics through workshops and competitions. The Seminole County students engaged in various math activities that encouraged creative thinking and problem-solving from diverse perspectives. One of the highlights of the day was the session "Math Magic Trick: Understanding Binary Numbers." In addition to the workshops, the students had the opportunity to learn about potential career paths in science and mathematics from distinguished chemist Dr. Amy McKenna of the Mag Lab in Tallahassee, FL, as well as professors at VSU. The event was a great success and provided the students with an enriching experience in mathematics.
